Joey White talks about Kids Ministry with Rylee Widner, the Central Kids Director at StoneWater Church.

She walks us through two main ways to create a healthy environment for Kids Ministry.

Step #1: Care for the Kids Director

  • Pastors should high-five the Kids Ministry leaders on Sunday mornings
  • Pray with them
  • Help Kids Ministry leaders guard their margins
  • Prevent leader burn out
  • Let them know they’re appreciated
  • Pastor being seen in the Kids Ministry area should be “normal” and not an indication that something’s “wrong”

Ask yourself: When’s the last time you walked through Kids Ministry?

Step #2: Kids Director doesn’t have to be a “kids person”

  • More important to be a student/adult person
  • Ultimately, a good Kids Director is a good shepherd of “kids people”

Ask yourself: How are you deploying your students?

Staffing Question: Does the Kids Director have to be full time?

  • No, start the Kids Director out as part time, and then scale the position with the growth of the church
  • Suggested starting time = 10 hours/week
  • Some churches only have volunteers running Kids Ministry
